“French women treat their ‘base’ as best as they can—so we try to have amazing skin, and an amazing body, and amazing hair, so we don’t have to do too much else,” says French makeup artist Violette in an interview with Vogue Magazine.

2. Less Is More
In her book, The French Beauty Secret, Mathilde Thomas explains that “In France we’re about glowing, great-looking skin, so we can have this no-makeup makeup look, and it works,” Thomas suggests that French Beauty is about highlighting what you like, instead of changing what you don’t like. Instead of applying foundation like a cream, Thomas suggests that the ‘french way’ is simply to apply it only on the area’s of the face you feel needs coverage and then leaving the rest bare. Giving new meaning to the phrase ‘no makeup makeup’ Thomas explains this trick will make the face look naturally flawless instead of flat and cakey.
3. Rock the Red (and nothing else)
“That’s the identity of a Parisian woman, says Violette, ” It’s how you wear a crimson or scarlet shade that makes it fully French However, the coveted makeup artists remains with the less is more attitude iconic to the french, stating that a “Red lipstick is a fashion accessory. So we won’t wear any other makeup with it,”
Violette suggests Mac’s Ruby Woo Lipstic (36 AUD)
4. Beauty is Pleasure (not pain)
Model and beauty author, Caroline de Maigret, states that above all a beauty routine should be enjoyable.
